Products to build a diet

Before you can talk about your face regimen order, you need to understand the types of products that make up a complete skin care routine. Each product has a specific function, but the exact ingredients vary depending on the brand you purchase.

Oil-based cleaner

It sounds counterintuitive but using an oil-based face wash helps remove excess oil from your face. These products can therefore be particularly effective for people with excessively oily skin. An oil-based cleanser will also help remove makeup and environmental pollutants your skin has been exposed to throughout the day.

Water-based cleaner

A water-based cleaner will help remove stubborn dirt and residue that the oil-based cleaner was unable to completely remove. This method of double cleansing has become extremely popular in recent years and for good reason – it works! Proper cleansing has been shown to help slow the signs of premature aging.

Exfoliating

Using an exfoliator, whether physical or chemical, helps loosen and remove dead skin cells from the surface of your face. If left to linger on your skin, the cells would begin to clog your pores and cause breakouts. Many mistakenly feel that exfoliation should only happen when they have an active breakout and to avoid the process altogether if you have sensitive skin. However, exfoliation is a safe and crucial step for every skin type, you just need to monitor your skin’s reaction and adjust how often you exfoliate accordingly.

Tonic

Toners are often overlooked as an unnecessary step, but they are a powerful part of your daily skincare routine. They help balance your skin tone and remove pore-clogging dirt, debris, and makeup that your cleansers may have left behind. Additionally, toners are designed to remove excess oil and balance your skin’s pH, which is extremely important in preventing breakouts. Additionally, a toner can help replenish moisture lost during cleansing and prepare the skin to better absorb all the active ingredients found in the products that follow.

Species

Like the above, essences are a lightweight liquid designed to hydrate your skin and further prepare your face for any products that follow it. A face essence may feel a little creamier than a toner and contains higher levels of active ingredients to help the product penetrate deeper into your skin, helping to rebalance your face after cleansing and tone it.

Serums

Serums have gained a huge following over the past few years because they can help address targeted skin concerns. Typically, a serum only contains a few active ingredients (such as hyaluronic acid or salicylic acid) that target a specific result such as skin brightening. These active ingredients tend to be more concentrated than those found in other products, such as a moisturizer, and the product usually has a thicker oily consistency.

Spot treatment

Applying a spot treatment can help quickly treat any active breakouts you may have. These products usually contain the highest level of active ingredients, like benzoyl peroxide or sulfur, to help dry out any acne-prone skin. Because they have such a high concentration of active ingredients, these products should only be applied directly to the point of skin affected by the rash, and not all over your face – hence the term spot treatment. Once applied, no other product should be applied to the treated areas of your face.

Eye contour cream

While eye creams may contain many of the same ingredients as a regular moisturizer, they are formulated with lower, less potent doses of those ingredients. Besides providing moisture to this area of your face, the main purpose of an eye cream is to brighten the eye area and help minimize the appearance of fine lines.

Moisturizer

A moisturizer is designed to hydrate the rest of the skin on your face and can help deliver extra nutrients to your skin. Regular use of a moisturizer helps maintain your skin’s natural barrier against environmental stressors while keeping you young, fresh, and glowing. Keeping your face hydrated prevents your skin from overheating.

Solar cream

Using sunscreen daily is one of the most important steps in your skincare routine. Without it, you expose your face to unnecessary damage and an increased risk of developing health problems such as skin cancer. Additionally, continued exposure to the sun without protection is linked to premature skin aging.

Sleeping mask

Not to be confused with a sheet eye mask. This skincare step was popularized by the Korean skincare community and is designed to seal in the rest of your products. A sleep mask is formulated based on the specific skin type. And any skin concerns of the individual user but keeps the ingredients. Gentle enough for your skin to tolerate overnight.

Choose the right products

As you sift through the hundreds of thousands of products available to you, you’ll want to keep a few things in mind to make sure you choose the ones that are right for your skin. The product you choose if you have oily skin will be very different from those you would choose for sensitive skin. That’s why it’s imperative to choose skincare for oily skin, dry skin, aging skin, or whatever your specific skin concerns are. Second, identify specific skin concerns or goals you may have.

As we have discussed, some products, like serums, can help you address your concerns effectively, but you will need to be familiar with them to choose the right product. Whatever your skin type, esthetician recommends that you include the following:

  • peptides
  • fruit acids
  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Vitamin C
  • Retinoids

Finally, try a few products. Unfortunately, there’s no real way to know how your skin will react to a product unless you try it.

Your skincare routine order

Now that you know all about the different products in a complete skincare routine. What they do, and how to choose them, let’s talk about the order in which you should apply them to your face. Specifically, you might want to have a different morning. And evening routine simply because some products, like sunscreen. Don’t need to be applied at both times of the day. Below, we’ll lay out an ideal morning and evening routine, but when in doubt, remember one simple rule… you always want to apply your products from thin to thick depending on their consistency.

Morning routine

A good morning routine will consist of eliminating the products. Of the day before and preparing your skin to face the day. Here’s what an ideal routine would look like:

  • oil cleaner
  • Water cleaner
  • Tonic
  • Essence
  • Serum
  • Eye contour cream
  • moisturizer
  • Solar cream

If that sounds like a lot, don’t worry! Some of these steps can be combined or eliminated if you are in a hurry or cannot buy all the products. For example, you’ll probably be able to find a daytime moisturizer that also contains SPF (sun protection factor) ingredients that allow you to do two steps at once.

On a budget? You can eliminate an essence from your routine to keep your product like goat milk soap list more friendly to your wallet. No skin concerns. If you are satisfied with the appearance of your skin and consider your routine a maintenance plan. You may also consider removing serums from your routine. The advantage of developing a skincare routine is that it is fully customizable for you!

Night routine

For your evening routine, you may choose to reuse some of the same products you applied in the morning. Or you may decide to purchase additional products formulated for nighttime use. It really depends on you. Therefore, your nightly routine might look like this:

  • oil cleaner
  • Water cleaner
  • Exfoliating
  • Tonic
  • Essence
  • Serum
  • Spot treatment
  • Eye contour cream
  • moisturizer
  • Sleeping mask

However, not all these steps need to be done every night. Exfoliation should only be done a few times a week depending on your skin type and the product you have selected. Similarly, a sleeping mask can be used two to three times a week to provide a hydration boost; unless you have extremely dry skin, it is not necessary for daily use.

The same notes regarding your morning routine can also apply to an evening routine. You can choose to eliminate steps if you wish and find products that serve multiple purposes. Again, your routine is what you want it to be!

With more information, we hope you feel less overwhelmed and more empowered to start developing your own skincare routine. If you are still feeling a little stressed, try starting with a three-step routine: cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. Then, as you feel more comfortable, add more steps.
